SEATTLE (AP) — Authorities say the reason Seattle has seen a recent uptick in shootings is because personal disputes between gang members have been triggering a cycle of violence.
The Seattle Times reports 35 people have been shot in mid-May, three of which had been fatalities.
Lt. Marc Garth Green, who oversees the gang unit, says 27 people shot and five fatalities had been recorded at this time last year.
The number of reports of shots fired has also grown from 132 last year to 155 this year.
While Seattle ranks far behind other major cities in gun violence, the spike has generated concern, including a new fatal shooting of a 23-year-old man during a large gathering at a West Seattle beach on Tuesday.
