In Paris, Find A Quiet Park Or River Bank To Spend A Little Time

Looking out on the Seine, with the Eiffel Tower in the background.

It’s April in Paris, and the chestnuts really are in blossom, reports KNKX travel expert Matthew Brumley.

He says the spring and the fall are the best times to visit the capital of France.

Where To Go

There are, of course, the big sights and famous destinations anyone should see: The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Musee d’Orsay, and more. But if you’re looking for a break – or just a place to relax between destinations, try one of the city’s parks.

Brumley’s friend and longtime Parisian William Altman recommends Parc des Buttes Chaumot, in the north of the city.

“It was built up in the style of the grottos,” he said. “It looks like natural hills, but it’s all handmade.”

If you’re feeling social, try the Canal St. Martin, where you’ll find students and others picnicking by an old commercial canal that’s now mostly for recreation. It’s near the Republique stop on the Metro.

What To Do

Not too much! That’s a good rule almost anywhere you go, but in Paris, you should take a special delight in slowing down. So, yes, see the sights listed above.

But also go for a walk. Sit in a café and watch people. Have a picnic in a park or by the side of the Seine. It’s a great way to spend time in Paris.

If You Go

From Seattle, we found tickets in May starting just above $800. There’s some slight relief if you book now for fall, with the cheapest flights starting around $750.
