The Michael Brockman Quartet played the May concert in the Art of Jazz series at The Seattle Art Museum. With Michael on tenor sax, Randy Halberstadt at the piano, Phil Sparks, bass and D'vonne Lewis at the drums, the quartet played two sets featuring music by Billy Strayhorn and others with originals by Michael Brockman.
The concert was recorded for broadcast and will air on Jazz Northwest on Sunday, May 22 at 2 p.m. Pacific on 88.5 KPLU and streaming at KPLU.
Michael Brockman is on the music faculty at the University of Washington where he teaches saxophones and jazz arranging. He is also co-director (with Clarence Acox) of the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra and a guest performer with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. He is director of the UW's Jazz In Paris Summer program. Joining him in this concert are pianist Randy Halberstadt, bassist Phil Sparks, and drummer D'Vonne Lewis, each a leader in his own right.
The Art of Jazz Series at SAM is curated by John Gilbreath, director of Earshot Jazz. Next concert in the series will be the Happy Orchestra led by Tarik Aubozied on June 9 at 5:30 p.m. Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU, broadcast on Sundays at 2 p.m. Pacific and streaming at KPLU .
