Latin Jazz at Seattle's Earshot Jazz Festival

For the next few weeks on the Jazz Caliente blog, I'll feature previews of the Latin jazz artists appearing at this year'sEarshot Jazz Festival, October 1 through November 17.

The Cuban septet La Familia Valera Miranda will appear at  Seattle’s Earshot Jazz Festival Saturday, October 5 at Town Hall.  They’re the embodiment of the Cuban musical style called son, and this group comes from two long lines of master musicians.  For more information, see the September 5th Jazz Caliente post.

Brazilian multi-instrumentalist and singer Vinicius Cantuária settled in Brooklyn in 1994, devoting himself to singing, guitar, jazz and bossa nova.  He's been called a "bossa nova poet."  He leads his quartet at the Triple Door on Sunday, October 6.

Cuban-born saxophonist and educator Yosvanny Terry incorporates American jazz traditions with his own Afro-Cuban roots, and has been said to have "...redefined Latin jazz as a complex new idiom.” (New York Times).  He's also a talented chekeré player, received his earliest training from his father, Eladio “Don Pancho” Terry, violinist and Cuba’s leading player of the chekeré.   Yosvanny Terry Quintet performs at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute on Wednesday October 9.
