Jazz Northwest For April 29, 2018

Gary Firholt from The Helix

It's the 50th anniversary of the famous KRAB - Helix Piano Drop.  The event took place near Duvall, Washington and involved a piano, a helicopter, Country Joe and The Fish and a bunch of people looking for something new.  You kind of had to be there - but you get the idea, don't you?

However, no pianos will be harmed or destroyed on today's Jazz Northwest.  We can promise several excellent pianists, ranging from Wynton Kelly at The Penthouse in Seattle (1966) to recent recordings by Bob Hammer and Dawn Cement (2018).  Vancouver BC saxophonist Cory Weeds grooves with NY organist Mike LeDonne on music from Earth, Wind & Fire. There's much more including the best bets for live jazz in the coming week.

Next week's Jazz Northwest  will feature a concert by The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra playing Duke Ellington's "Such Sweet Thunder" - a suite of musical portraits of Shakespearean characters.  Darragh Kennaugh and Hana Lass from Seattle Shakespeare provide appropriate excerpts from the plays between movements.

Jim has been a fixture on Seattle radio since 1961. He was the host of Jazz After Hours on Public Radio International from 1984-2014. Currently Jim has been producing Jazz Northwest for KNKX since 1988. This weekly program focuses on the regional jazz scene and frequently includes performances Jim records on location for Jazz Northwest.
