Going Back To School Lunches

Julie Notarianni
Nancy and sister Sherry Baby's favorite school days lunch spot

The phrase "Back to school" always puts me into a warm and happy frame of mind.  Mainly because I know it won't be me who has to go back to school.  Ever again.  Nancy Leson says "See?  I feel the complete opposite of you."

"So what else is new?" I asked her.

Nancy's mention of the crisp (at least on the East Coast) autumn air of back to school days did trigger a pleasant sense memory.  It instantly reminded me of a  first day of school, waiting for  the bell in the cool fall sunshine and someone's transistor tuned to 1010 WINS and the Four Seasons' Sherry Baby. I still love that song.

As for those school lunches, in elementary school Nance and her sister Sherry, who she nicknamed "Sherry Baby," loved walking to Bea and Mel's Luncheonette in Philly for a shared cheesesteak.

My main recollection of school cuisine in Jr. High is of the crude but effective method the tough guys employed to get a free lunch.  Hear all about it in this week's segment.  And don't miss Nancy's  confession of her Most Embarassing School Lunchroom Moment.

"Office hours are from 12 to 1 with an hour off for lunch." –  George S. Kauffman
