Flamenco Jazz Concert By Chano Domínguez

Jim Wilke
Chano Domínguez, Noelia Valdes, Pablo Domínguez";

Internationally renown Spanish pianist Chano Domínguez was born in Cadiz and grew up playing guitar, learning the tradition of flamenco music and dance from his father.  Later, switching to piano and discovering jazz, he was deeply influenced by jazz pianists Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans.  Quite naturally, he soon found ways to combine his Spanish heritage and his new love for jazz.

Today, he tours internationally and has recorded numerous albums including "Flamenco Sketches" which gave a Spanish tinge to Miles Davis' classic album "Kind of Blue."  The album was nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2012.

Last October, Chano Domínguez performed solo, with trio and additional artists in concert at Teatro Zinzanni as part of the 2015 Earshot Festival.  The trio included Jeff Johnson, bass, and Jose Martinez, drums, plus guest artists Noelia Valdes, palmas (handclaps) and dancer, Pablo Domínguez, percussion and Hans Teuber, flute and saxophones.  The music on the program included original compositions by Chano Domínguez as well as his arrangements of music of Miles Davis, Manuel De Falla and traditional songs.

This concert will be presented on 88.5 KPLU and streaming at kplu.org in two parts, with part 1 airing on January 3 at 2 p.m. Pacific, and part 2 airing on January 10 also at 2 p.m.  Our thanks to the musicians, Earshot Jazz and the staff at Teatro Zinzanni for their help to make this broadcast possible.  Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for KPLU.  An archive of earlier programs may be streamed at jazznw.org.
