The trumpeter, a huge hit at last year’s festival, offers fresh takes on the tradition. Winner of the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, Hill embodies the new Chicago sound with Braxton Cook (sax), Joel Ross (vibes), Jeremiah Hunt (bass), and Jonathan Pinson (drums).

Keyon Harrold (Early Show)

The Triple Door, Seattle
This virtuoso provided the trumpet parts for Don Cheadle’s film portrayal of Miles Davis. His own creations, mixing jazz, soul, and hip-hop, bring the news about America today: sweeping portrayals of communities in crisis, yet persisting in hope.

Alex Dugdale Fade Quintet
Tuesday, October 30 at 7:30pm

Vernon Reid Band of Gypsies Revisited (Early Show)
Friday, November 2 at 7:00pm
The Triple Door, Seattle
Hendrix tributes don’t get heavier than this. Veterans of the Burnt Sugar Arkestra (“territory band, neo-tribal thang”) — guitarists Vernon Reid (Living Colour) and André “Dré Glo” Lasselle (Lady Miss Kier) and bassist Jared Michael Nickerson (Charlie Musselwhite) — join drummer James “Biscuit” Rouse (Lauryn Hill) to conjure up Jimi Hendrix, Billy Cox, and Buddy Miles.

Tia Fuller Quartet
Saturday, November 3 at 8:00pm
Seattle Art Museum, Seattle
Whether backing Beyonce, performing at the White House, recording with the likes of Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland, or teaching at Berklee College, the saxophonist conjures up “melodic medicine” on stage as on her several releases as a leader, the latest “Diamond Cut.”
