Cuban Official Visiting Seattle Says His Country Has More To Offer Than Rum And Cigars

Miguel Fraga
Miguel Fraga, the First Secretary for the Cuban Embassay in the United States. He travels frequently to educate people in the U.S. about his country.

An official from Cuba’s embassy in the U.S. is visiting Seattle for the next few days. Miguel Fraga is the First Secretary of the newly re-established Cuban Embassy in Washington D.C. Fraga is in town to tell people about his home country.

“People don’t know [about] the real situation in Cuba. People only know about things ... we produce rum or tobacco. But they don’t know the real information about our country,” said Fraga.

Even though diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba are restored, the U.S. embargo against Cuba is still in place. The embargo limits many things, including travel and business between the two nations.

Fraga, who has been crisscrossing the United States since he first arrived last summer, said most Americans do not know that Cuba boasts an internationally respected medical community and biotech industry.

When asked what Cubans know about the Northwest, Fraga said most people in his country are very familiar with the Seattle skyline. The television show, Grey's Anatomy, is very popular in Cuba.

After Seattle, Fraga heads to San Francisco.
