Austria, Without Vienna: Three Tour Guides On Their Hometowns

Fall and winter can be beautiful times to visit Salzburg, Austria.

If you’re going to Austria, forget about Vienna.

Just kidding. Vienna’s pretty amazing, as we’ve discussed in a previous episode of “Going Places.”

But this week, we hear from three tour guides who hail from different parts of Austria (none of them the capital city), and each with its own charm.

Getting There

The cheapest wintertime flights from Seattle to Salzburg were around $950 round trip. At the peak of the summer festival season, a coach airfare could run you anywhere between $1,100 and $2,500.

Most flights out of Seattle take you to Frankfurt, Germany, first.

Being There

The experience you have largely depends on when you go. This time of year, young wines are in from a fresh harvest. Snow is making its way down the mountains and into the cities. Ski season is about to begin.

You’ll find fewer people competing for restaurants and lodging in the fall.

But in the spring and summer, you’ll find a variety of music and art festivals, including the noted  Salzburg Festival that takes place in July and August. A longer listing is available at Austria’s official tourism site.
